Short answer: How much to charge for drywall is built, not looked up. Butt joints are the reason this matters. A tapered seam takes compound in a factory-made recess. A butt joint has no recess, so it gets floated wide, feathered, and sanded, and it is the joint that telegraphs through paint two winters later.

Two questions decide it, and you should ask both before quoting anything: what sheen is the paint, and is there a window or a fixture throwing raking light down a long wall. Gloss, semi-gloss, deep colors, or critical lighting mean Level 5. Flat paint on eight-foot walls with normal lighting does not.

Overhead is a second layer and it is charged per billable hour, not per job. Add the truck payment, fuel, insurance, phone, licensing, advertising, storage, the accountant, and the hours you spend bidding work you do not win. Three checks on that number. Material is 14.7 percent of the price, which is normal for hang and finish. Price per person-hour sold is $98.60. And price per square foot of board is $4.05.
That last figure is at or above what most published ranges suggest, and it should be interrogated rather than accepted. The reasons are visible in the takeoff: 98 sheets carried down a stairwell, a 5/8 ceiling, 148 linear feet of bead on a cut-up plan, and containment because someone lives upstairs. The same crew hanging 4x12s on an open new-construction floor with four outside corners would finish in far fewer hours, and the per-foot number would fall with them. That is the whole reason a single per-square-foot price is a poor way to quote.
