T4A Tax Form for Contractors: What Box 048 Means for Your Taxes

Short answer: A T4A is an information slip a client files with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and sends to you when it paid you more than $500 in fees for services in a calendar year, or deducted tax. For a contractor, box 048 shows those fees, without GST/HST or PST. It isn’t a bill, and no CPP or EI was taken off. You report the income as self-employment income on Form T2125, whether or not a slip arrives, and pay the tax and both halves of CPP yourself. Slips are due by the end of February. If one is missing, ask the payer or check My Account; if it’s wrong, ask the payer to amend it.

The rules below are the CRA’s, and the examples use the 2026 tax year: slips for 2026 arrive by early 2027, and the return goes in by June 15, 2027. This page is for freelancers, consultants and tradespeople who invoice clients. Whether you should be getting a T4 instead is covered in independent contractor vs employee, and the form you report on is walked through in T2125 explained.

What is a T4A slip, and why did a client send you one?

A T4A is the slip a business uses to report certain payments it made during the year, including fees paid to self-employed people.

A payer must fill out a T4A for a self-employed person when the fees for services it paid them in the calendar year total more than $500, or when it deducted tax from any payment. One copy goes to you and one to the CRA, which is how the CRA can match the slip against your return. Slips are due by the last day of February after the calendar year, or the next business day if that falls on a weekend.

Getting a T4A doesn’t make you an employee, and not getting one doesn’t mean the income is tax-free. It is a report of what one client paid you, nothing more.

What does box 048 on a T4A mean?

Box 048 is “fees for services”: the total the payer paid you during the calendar year for your work, without sales tax.

What you seeWhat it meansWhat you do
Amount in box 048Fees for services paid to you in the calendar yearInclude it in your gross business or professional income on the T2125
GST/HST or PSTShould not be in box 048If it is, ask the payer for an amended slip
Income tax deductedOnly if the payer withheld tax, which is unusual for contractorsClaim it on your return as tax already paid
No CPP or EIContractors pay their own CPP; EI is optionalPay CPP with your return

The CRA’s T4A slip page says the box 048 amount goes on the applicable self-employment line of your return, lines 13499 to 14300. In practice, that means through Form T2125.

How do you report a T4A on your T2125?

Box 048 is already part of the income you invoiced, so it goes into your T2125 gross income once, not on top of it.

Most tax software asks you to enter the box 048 total, but the figure that matters is your gross income from all your invoices. Slips cover only the clients that paid you more than $500. Your own records cover everyone.

Worked example. An Ontario web developer, registered for HST, bills three clients in 2026:

ClientFees invoiced (before HST)Slip received
Agency A$30,000T4A, box 048: $30,000
Retailer B$17,600T4A, box 048: $17,600
Café C$400None (under $500)
Total$48,000

Her T2125 gross income is $48,000: all three clients, without the HST she collected, which goes on her GST/HST return instead. It isn’t $47,600 (only the slips), and it isn’t $95,600 (slips added to invoices). The T2125 then carries her income to the self-employment lines of her return, line 13499 for business income or 13699 for professional income, as T2125 explained sets out.

What if a T4A doesn’t match your invoices?

Find out why before you file, and ask the payer to fix the slip if the slip is wrong; don’t change your return to match a wrong slip.

Common reasons for a mismatch:

  • Sales tax included. GST/HST and PST don’t belong in box 048. A slip showing $33,900 for $30,000 of fees plus 13% HST is wrong.
  • Timing. The slip shows what the payer paid in the calendar year. An invoice from December paid in January can land on next year’s slip, while your T2125 follows your own fiscal period and accounting method.
  • Reimbursed expenses added to the fees, or a payment to someone else recorded under your name.
  • Wrong identity details, such as your name, SIN or business number.

The payer must send the CRA amended slips when it knows the information in any box is incorrect, and give you a copy. Send the payer your invoice list for the year, totals before tax, and ask for an amended T4A. Then report what you actually earned, keep the correspondence, and file on time.

What if you don’t get a T4A?

Report the income anyway. Below $500 the payer doesn’t have to issue one, and above it a missing slip doesn’t change what you owe.

If you expected a slip and it hasn’t come, the CRA’s get a copy of your slips page lists your options:

  1. Ask the payer for a copy.
  2. Check My Account. Once the payer has filed the slip with the CRA, you may be able to see it under your tax information slips.
  3. If you can’t get it in time, estimate the income from your records and attach a note with the payer’s name and address, the type of income and what you’re doing to get the slip.

For a contractor, step 3 is easy: your invoices and payment records already show the exact amount. File by the deadline rather than waiting for a late slip.

Do you pay tax on T4A income, and why was nothing withheld?

Yes. Fees for services are paid without CPP or EI deductions, and usually without income tax, so you pay it all when you file.

On your net self-employment income you pay federal and provincial income tax, plus both halves of CPP: 11.9% on earnings between $3,500 and $74,600 in 2026, from the CRA’s CPP rates page. For the 2026 tax year, you file by June 15, 2027 but pay any balance by April 30, 2027, per the CRA’s 2026 tax deadlines.

With $48,000 of fees and $8,000 of expenses, the developer above nets $40,000. Her CPP alone is 11.9% × ($40,000 − $3,500) = $4,343.50, before any income tax. Setting money aside from each payment is the only way to avoid a large April bill; CPP for the self-employed and how to pay CRA taxes owing cover the rest.

What happens if you forget to report a T4A?

The CRA receives its own copy, so expect a reassessment, interest, and possibly a penalty if it has happened before.

The repeated failure to report income penalty can apply if you fail to report $500 or more of income on your return and also failed to report $500 or more on any of the three previous returns. It is the lesser of 10% of the amount you didn’t report and 50% of the difference between the tax you understated and any tax withheld on that amount. If you find a missed slip after filing, ask the CRA to change your return rather than waiting for it to find the gap.

T4A, T4 or T5018: which slip will you get?

It depends on whether you’re an employee and on what kind of business pays you.

SlipWho issues itWhat it means for you
T4An employerEmployment income, with CPP, EI and tax deducted
T4A, box 048A business that paid you more than $500 in fees for servicesSelf-employment income for your T2125
T5018A business that earns more than 50% of its income from construction, paying subcontractorsConstruction subcontract payments for your T2125

A construction business must report payments to Canadian resident subcontractors for construction services on a T5018 slip when they total more than $500 in the reporting period, not counting GST/HST. So a drywaller working for a builder may get a T5018 where a designer working for an agency gets a T4A. Either way, the income goes on your T2125.

…and where does Keel fit?

Checking a T4A is a matter of comparing one client’s total with your own record of what you billed and when you were paid. Keel: Invoice Maker & Receipts, by Ilura Technology OÜ, is an iPhone app that keeps that record: customers, invoices sent as PDFs, receipts and expenses, each kept under its job, and “who owes you” with reminder drafts you review and send yourself.

Keel doesn’t read T4A slips, fill in your T2125, calculate tax or CPP, or connect to the CRA. Records stay on your iPhone, with no account, no bank connection and no cloud sync, and the App Store privacy label reads “Data Not Collected.” It’s free with no invoice limit (free invoices carry a small “Made with Keel” footer). Keel Lifetime is a one-time purchase ($249.99 USD; the App Store shows your local price) that adds custom branding, a signature, premium templates and accountant-ready exports and advanced reports. Frequently asked questions

Do I have to report income if I didn’t get a T4A? Yes. A payer only has to issue a T4A when fees for services total more than $500 in the calendar year, and a missing slip doesn’t make the income tax-free. Report all your business income on Form T2125 using your own invoices and payment records.

Is the T4A box 048 amount my taxable income? It is part of your gross income, not your taxable income. You report it, with all your other fees, as gross income on the T2125, then deduct your business expenses to reach net income. Tax and CPP are worked out on that net figure along with your other income.

Does getting a T4A mean I’m self-employed? Not by itself. Your status depends on how the work is actually done, using the CRA’s tests on control, tools, financial risk and opportunity for profit. If a client issues you a T4A but treats you like an employee, read contractor vs employee and consider asking the CRA for a CPP/EI ruling.

Should GST/HST be included in T4A box 048? No. GST/HST and PST are left out of box 048. If your slip includes them, ask the payer to amend it, and report only your fees, before tax, as income on the T2125. The sales tax you collected goes on your GST/HST return.

When will I get my T4A slip? Payers must issue T4A slips by the last day of February after the calendar year, or the next business day if that falls on a weekend. For 2026 payments, that means by the end of February 2027. Once the payer has filed, you may also be able to see it in My Account.
