Short answer: How much to charge for electrical work starts with two counts — devices, meaning receptacles, switches and fixtures, and circuits — with service size in amps carrying the large jobs. Multiply those counts by access, because one receptacle is a 25-minute device in open rough-in and a two-hour device in a finished plaster wall. Then add your loaded field hour, overhead per billable hour, permit and inspection at cost, and margin. Electricians lose money in a specific place: they quote from a device count that came off a walkthrough of a finished house and price it with hours that came from a rough-in they did last spring. The counts are honest. The multiplier is missing. Everything below is about getting the multiplier onto the page before the number goes out.

Device count is also where scope arguments start. A “bedroom” on a plan is a device schedule: receptacles at code spacing, a switched outlet or ceiling box, a smoke and CO device, and the AFCI protection on the circuit. Write the count on the quote and the argument stops.

Why does the same receptacle carry three different prices?

Access. It is the single largest multiplier in residential electrical and it is invisible in a device count.

Price each access class separately and keep them separate on the quote. If your finished-wall device price sits close to your rough-in device price, one of the two is wrong, and it is almost always the finished one.

Two adjacent conditions decide which class a job falls into before you write anything: what is above and below the room, and whether the wall cavity is insulated. Check both on the walkthrough, not on the morning of the job.

Run your own burden from last year’s statements. Comp classification and the cost of carrying a license and bond are trade-specific, and borrowing another shop’s 1.36 is how a rate drifts low without anyone noticing.

Overhead for an electrical shop includes some items other trades do not carry: continuing education for license renewal, the truck stock of devices and wire you replenish without invoicing, permit portal fees and the hours spent at counters, code book cycles, and the re-inspection you occasionally eat. Divide the annual total by hours you actually billed, not hours you paid for. That works out to $387.50 per device, and the number is only meaningful inside its own access class and circuit condition. The same six devices dropped into an open rough-in with an existing circuit are a different product and a much smaller number. Publish both. Do not average them.

How do I build a panel upgrade price?

Not as a lump sum. A 100 A to 200 A change is eight or nine separately priced components, and the one that surprises people is the breaker count.

Two habits keep this profitable. Count the re-land breakers on the walkthrough, in front of the panel, with the cover off, and write the count on the quote. And price a 400 A service as its own animal rather than as two 200s — the metering arrangement, conductors, and coordination are different work. How do I price an EV charger circuit?

By the run, not by the charger. The equipment is a fixed number the customer can look up; your price lives in the distance between the panel and the wall where they want it, and in whether the service can carry the load at all.

Three inputs decide the ticket. First, the load calculation — whether the existing service has capacity, and if not, the job is a panel upgrade with a charger attached. Second, conductor sizing: NEC 625.41 treats EV supply equipment as a continuous load and requires branch-circuit conductors and overcurrent protection at 125 percent of the equipment’s maximum output current, so a 48 A charger is a 60 A circuit, not a 48 A one, and the feeder and service calculation is a separate step under 625.42. Third, one-way distance, which drives both wire cost and voltage drop, and which decides whether the run is NM through joists or conduit across a masonry wall.

Quote the conductor size and the breaker rating in the description. A customer comparing your bid against a cheaper one is usually comparing two different circuits, and the sentence that names 6 AWG copper on a 60 A breaker is what makes the difference visible.

Am I adding markup or taking margin?

Different arithmetic, and getting them backwards quietly shrinks every job you have ever quoted.

To convert, divide the margin you want by one minus that margin: a 28 percent margin needs a 38.9 percent markup. Apply it consistently across labor and material, and leave true pass-throughs — permit fees, inspection fees, utility charges — at cost with the receipt available. Marking up a permit is the fastest way to lose a customer who calls the county and finds out what it actually cost.

How do I check the number before it goes out?

Reverse it. Take the quoted price, subtract material and permit, and divide by field hours: on the receptacle job that is ($2,325 − $308.60 − $95.00) ÷ 11.5 = $167.08 per field hour. That is the figure to compare across a service call, a fixture day, and a panel change, and it should clear your loaded field hour of $112.74 by the margin you intended.

Then check outward, carefully. Published averages for panel upgrades and outlet installation swing by more than double between metros and shift with permit regimes, utility requirements, copper pricing, and how far the van drove. They are useful only for catching an order-of-magnitude error. Your comp rate, your inspection jurisdiction, your access conditions, and your overhead decide the answer. If your number lands far above what your market pays, look at billable hours, drive time, and free troubleshooting before you cut the rate.

What should I record after every job?

Why does a finished wall cost so much more than new construction? Because the wire is a small part of the price and the fishing is most of it. In rough-in you drill and staple in the open. In a finished wall you locate, fish blind, cut access openings, install old-work boxes, and patch — and blown insulation or fire blocking can stop a fish rod entirely. Price the two as separate products.
