Federal estimate for 2026 using the standard deduction and the qualified business income deduction; it leaves out credits, itemized deductions and retirement contributions. A planning figure, not tax advice.

How the calculator works it out

  1. Self-employment tax: 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit. The 12.4% Social Security part stops at the 2026 wage base of $184,500, counting any W-2 wages first; the 2.9% Medicare part has no cap. There is none at all below $400 of net earnings.
  2. The deductible half: half of the self-employment tax comes off your income before income tax is worked out.
  3. Deductions: the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household) and the 20% qualified business income deduction.
  4. Income tax: the 2026 brackets, counting only the tax your business profit adds on top of any W-2 wages, since those wages are already covered by withholding.
  5. Set-aside rate: the total divided by your profit. Moving that share of every payment into a separate account as it lands is what makes the quarterly dates uneventful.

The same method, step by step on $65,000 of profit, is in how much tax you will pay self-employed. The form behind the first step is covered in Schedule SE explained, and the tax itself in self-employment tax.

When do I pay it?

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more for the year, the IRS expects quarterly estimated payments, due April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. The calculator splits the year's total into four equal payments; quarterly estimated taxes explained covers the safe-harbor rules that can lower what you owe in penalties, and how much to set aside for 1099 taxes turns the rate into a habit.

What the estimate leaves out

Tax credits, itemized deductions, retirement contributions, self-employed health insurance and other household income besides W-2 wages. State tax is a flat percentage you enter, which is a simplification for states with brackets. At higher incomes, where the qualified business income deduction can be limited, the calculator leaves that deduction out, so the result errs high rather than low. Use it to plan how much to keep aside, and a tax professional to file.

Why records change the number

Every figure above starts from your net profit, and profit is revenue minus the expenses you can prove. A receipt you lose or a business trip you never logged is taxed as if it were profit. At the 2026 IRS rate of 72.5 cents a mile, 5,000 business miles is a $3,625 deduction, but only with a log. Keel records invoices, receipts and mileage on your iPhone for free, with no account and no bank connection; the only paid part is the tax package, Keel Pro, a one-time $249.99.
