How to Estimate Gutter Installation Jobs: Feet and Drops

Short answer: To estimate gutter installation jobs, take two units off the house: linear feet of run measured elevation by elevation, and the count of downspouts with their drop heights. A gutter estimate written as one number times one length is a coin flip. The footage is the easy part and it is rarely where the job goes wrong. What goes wrong is a drop nobody counted, a third elevation nobody could reach, or a fascia board that turned out to be sponge.

What are the two units a gutter quote actually runs on?

Linear feet and drops. They behave differently and they have to be counted separately.

Linear feet is formed material, hangers, sealant, and the walk along the eave. It scales smoothly: a hundred feet costs roughly twice what fifty feet costs, on the same elevation, in the same material.

Drops do not scale with footage at all. A downspout is an outlet punched and sealed, a run of pipe cut to a height you measured, two or three elbows to get around the overhang, straps into siding, and a kick-out at grade. On a two-story elevation the same drop is twice the pipe and a much longer ladder. Two houses with identical footage and a four-drop difference are not the same job, and a per-foot price cannot tell them apart.

Price the run per foot, price the drops per unit, and only afterwards look at what the total works out to per foot. That figure is a report card, not an input. The cost arithmetic behind it is in how much to charge for gutter.

How do I take the measurements without getting on the roof?

Elevation by elevation, from the ground, and written on a sketch rather than in your head.

Draw the footprint as a rough rectangle set and walk the perimeter. For each side, record the eave length with a laser or a measuring wheel, then mark on the sketch every inside corner, every outside corner, and each end that needs a cap. A cut-up roof with four inside corners and three outside corners on one elevation consumes miters, sealant, and time that a straight ninety-foot ranch run never touches.

Then record, per elevation:

  • Run length and the direction you intend to slope it.
  • Inside miters, outside miters, and left and right end caps.
  • Downspout locations and the drop height measured from the eave to grade.
  • Hanger count, which is the run divided by your spacing plus one. Twenty-four to thirty-six inches is the normal band, and snow and ice country lives at the tight end of it.
  • Guard footage, which is not always the same as gutter footage — customers often want the back of the house left plain.
  • Whether the old gutter is coming off, and what it is attached with.

One measurement people skip: the slope. A common working fall is about a quarter inch per ten feet toward the outlet, so a forty-foot run pitched to a single end drops an inch across a fascia board that is dead level. That shows from the driveway. Long runs get a high point in the middle and a drop at each end, which is a second downspout you have to have counted before you quoted.

Where do downspouts go, and how many does the roof need?

Where the water is, which is not always where the customer wants the pipe.

A working starting point is a drop every thirty to forty feet of run, tightened wherever roof area concentrates. A valley dumping onto a twelve-foot section of eave moves more water than sixty feet of open roof, and that short run needs its own outlet regardless of what the footage suggests. Outlet size follows the gutter profile: a five-inch K-style pairs with a two-by-three downspout, a six-inch pairs with a three-by-four, and the larger pipe carries substantially more water than the smaller one.

Then count what each drop physically takes: the outlet, two elbows to get out over the overhang and back to the wall, the pipe itself, straps at the intervals your siding allows, and the elbow or kick-out at the bottom. A drop that has to jog around a bay window, cross a porch roof, or tie into a buried line is not a standard drop and should not carry a standard price. Underground tie-ins in particular are their own line, because you are now responsible for something you cannot see.

What does the material choice change about the estimate?

Copper is the row that breaks estimates. It is not aluminum with a premium added. Joints are soldered rather than sealed, the crew doing it is a different skill level, the scrap has value to somebody else, and a mistake costs many times what the same mistake costs in aluminum. Bid it as its own category or do not bid it.

The seamless machine deserves a site note of its own. It forms coil into gutter on the truck, which means the longest run you can produce is limited by where you can set up and how far you can feed the length. A house on a tight lot, behind a gate, or up a steep drive can force sectional work or an awkward carry, and that is a labor line discovered on the walk rather than on the day.

What does access do to the hours?

Access is a class, not a percentage bump. Set it per elevation, because one house can carry three of them.

Under all of it sits a rule that is also a cost. OSHA 1926.1053 requires that when a portable ladder is used to reach an upper landing, the side rails extend at least three feet above that landing, or the ladder is secured at the top with a grasping device provided. It is among the most frequently cited construction rules there is, and it means the ladder that reaches the gutter is not necessarily the ladder that is legal for getting onto the roof above it.

Which lines stay conditional until the old gutter comes down?

The ones nobody can see with a gutter bolted over them.

  • Fascia rot. This is the conditional line in this trade. A gutter that has overflowed for years has been feeding the board behind it, and the damage only appears when the old run drops. Quote replacement per linear foot of fascia, state the unit price on the estimate, and photograph what you find before you cut.
  • No fascia board at all. Some older homes hang the roof edge off exposed rafter tails. There is nothing to screw a hidden hanger into, and the fix is furring or a fascia install that is its own job.
  • Missing or backwards drip edge. Water running behind the gutter is not a gutter defect, and saying so afterwards sounds like an excuse.
  • A second gutter under the first. It happens more than you would think, and it doubles the tear-off.
  • Shingle overhang. Too short and the gutter has to be set higher than the customer expects; too long and the water shoots the front lip.
  • Wasp and hornet nests in the soffit return, which stop the day.

Write these as named unit prices rather than as vague allowances. A customer who has already seen the number for fascia replacement on the estimate rarely argues about it when the photo arrives.

What do I photograph and what do I ask?

Photograph every elevation wide enough to recount the run later, each downspout location and where the water will land, the fascia and roof edge close up on any elevation that looks stained or soft, the ground under every ladder position, and any existing damage to siding, decking, or landscaping.

Then ask:

  • Is this a replacement or a first install, and what is failing now?
  • Where does the water go once it leaves the downspout? Any buried lines?
  • Do you want guards, and on every elevation or only the ones under trees?
  • What color are you matching — siding, trim, or roof?
  • Has any of this fascia been repaired before?
  • Is the roof being replaced, and when? Sequence matters.
  • Is there anything under the eaves I should not put a ladder on?
  • Any dogs, gates, or hours we need to work around?

The roof question is the one that saves a return trip. Gutters installed before a roof replacement are often removed or damaged by the roofing crew, and being the one who raised it is worth more than being right about it later.

How is a cleaning or a repair priced differently from an installation?

They are separate services and they do not use the linear-foot unit at all.

Cleaning is priced on stories and house size, because the cost is ladder setups and the walk, not the length of the trough. A single-story ranch with two hundred feet of easy eave can be quicker than an eighty-foot two-story with landscaping under every window. Add lines for downspout flushing, roof debris removal, and hauling the muck away rather than leaving it in the beds. Repairs price on the visit: a minimum charge covering the drive and the setup, plus parts and time.

Say in writing which one you are quoting. A customer who thinks a cleaning includes resealing every seam and re-pitching a sagging run has been sold something you did not intend to deliver.

How do the feet and the drops become a price?

Convert each unit into your own hours, then into money.

Time real jobs and split them: crew-minutes per linear foot on a single-story run, crew-minutes per drop at each story, and setup and teardown per elevation. Multiply those against the counts on your sketch to get crew-hours. Multiply crew-hours by a loaded hourly cost that carries wages plus burden, the truck, the seamless machine and its maintenance, ladders, insurance, and the overhead the hour has to cover. Then add profit and be exact about which one. Markup is a percentage of cost; margin is a percentage of price. Adding 30 percent markup to $900 of cost gives $1,170, which is a 23.1 percent margin. Holding a true 30 percent margin means dividing $900 by 0.70 and quoting $1,286. Contractors who treat those as the same number are the ones who cannot explain a thin year.

Published per-foot prices vary by more than double between regions, materials, and story counts, and they move with aluminum pricing. Treat any figure you find as a sanity check on your own arithmetic, never as the arithmetic.
