Gutter Installation Pricing Guide: Feet Out, Drops Down

Short answer: A gutter installation pricing guide has to price two directions. Linear feet buy the horizontal run along the eave; the number of downspouts and their height buy the vertical, and a per-foot price hides all of it. Roughly 1 sq in of downspout cross-section per 100 sq ft of roof sets the drop count, and a run past 60 ft needs two outlets. The same 180 feet below carries 44 vertical feet on one house and 182 on the other.

Gutter is quoted per linear foot because that is the number a homeowner can compare across three bids. It is also the number that describes the easiest part of the job. The trough goes up fast. Drops, elbows, offsets, height, corners, and rotten fascia are where the day disappears, and none of them scale with the eave measurement. This page prices the vertical. What does a per-foot gutter price actually cover?

The trough, its hangers, its sealant, and the labor to hang it level. Nothing that goes down the wall.

Two houses with identical eave measurements can differ by a factor of four in downspout material and by more than that in labor, because the eave is horizontal and everything expensive is vertical. When a competitor’s per-foot number looks impossibly low, the usual explanation is that drops are being priced separately and quietly, or not at all until change-order time.

Quote the trough by the foot and the drops by the drop. Two units, two lines, both visible on the estimate. The customer can still compare your foot price against the other bids, and you stop giving away the half of the job that costs the most.

How many drops does the roof need, and who decides?

The roof does. The rule that has held up for decades is roughly 1 square inch of downspout cross-section for every 100 square feet of roof area draining to it.

Size the trough to match: 5 in K-style pairs with 2 × 3, 6 in K-style with 3 × 4, 7 in with 4 × 5. A supplier’s gutter and downspout sizing sheet will walk the same arithmetic with rainfall intensity and roof pitch factored in, which matters on steep roofs and in heavy-rain regions.

Two more constraints decide the count before aesthetics do. Any run of about 60 ft or longer wants at least two outlets, because one outlet on a long run means water standing at the far end. And a valley dumping onto a short section concentrates far more water than its footprint suggests, which is a place for an oversized outlet rather than an argument.

How do I count the vertical feet nobody puts on the quote?

Measure them, one drop at a time, the way you measure the eave.

Downspout length is eave height to grade, plus the offset from fascia to wall. A 26 ft eave is 26 ft of pipe per drop before the offset.

Elbows run two to three per drop as a minimum — one at the outlet, one or two to bring the pipe back to the wall — and every additional jog around a bay, a chimney chase, or a porch roof adds another pair.

Straps or bands go on at roughly 6 ft intervals up the wall, so a 26 ft drop takes four and an 11 ft drop takes two.

Terminations. A splash block, an elbow into a buried line, a pop-up emitter, or a tie into existing drain tile are four different amounts of work and three of them involve digging.

Add it up and you have a second linear-foot number that is entirely independent of the first. Put it on the estimate.

Height also changes what the work legally requires. Past a certain reach the ladder stops being the right tool and staging, a lift, or fall protection becomes the answer, and OSHA’s portable ladder requirements set out the side rail extension, load, and placement rules that a 26 ft eave forces you to actually think about. Rental of a lift for a day is a line on the estimate, not something absorbed by a foot rate.

What does the material actually consume per foot?

Coil, by width, and the width is fixed by the profile.

  • 5 in K-style is formed from 11.75 in coil. 6 in K-style is formed from 15 in coil. Six-inch is not “a little more” than five-inch — it is about 28 percent more aluminum per foot, plus a heavier hanger and a bigger outlet.
  • Gauge matters. Standard residential aluminum is commonly .027; .032 is stiffer, dents less, and costs more per foot. Price them as separate products because they are.
  • Copper and galvanized are different jobs, not upgrades. Half-round copper does not come off a seamless machine — it arrives in stock lengths with joints that get soldered, so your labor per foot rises at the same time your material per foot multiplies. Quoting copper at an aluminum foot rate with a material adder is how a week gets eaten.
  • Hangers go on at roughly 24 to 36 in on center, tighter where ice and snow load the trough. At 24 in on center, 180 ft of run is 90 hangers and 90 screws.
  • Slope is about 1/16 in per foot toward the outlet. On a 40 ft run that is a 2.5 in fall, which is a fascia measurement and a layout decision before it is a hanging decision.

What does the seamless machine cost before it makes a foot?

A fixed amount, on every job, regardless of length.

The trailer gets hitched, the coil gets loaded, the machine gets leveled and threaded, the first foot gets run and checked, and at the end of the day it all gets undone. That block of time does not shrink because the house is small. A 48 ft addition and a 240 ft colonial carry the same setup, which means the short job costs far more per foot than the long one and should be priced with a job minimum rather than a foot rate.

The same logic applies to a second trip. Coming back for a rear elevation you could not reach on Tuesday costs you a full mobilization for 40 ft of gutter.

Which lines have to be written as conditional?

The ones you cannot see from the ground before the old gutter comes off.

  • Fascia rot. Priced per linear foot of board replaced, with the caveat that hangers need sound wood. Write it as a unit price on the estimate — “rotted fascia replaced at $X per linear foot, quantity determined at tear-off” — so it is a pre-agreed rate instead of an argument on a ladder.
  • Fascia wrap or drip edge where the customer wants the repair hidden.
  • Tear-off and disposal of the old system, by the foot, plus the trip to the transfer station.
  • Gutter guards by the linear foot, in their own product tiers, because a foam insert and a stainless micro-mesh are not the same line item.
  • Buried downspout lines and anything requiring a shovel.

What does the same 180 feet look like on two houses?

Identical eave measurement, 6 in profile on both, same crew.

House A — a 1990s single-story ranch. Eave at 11 ft, driveway and lawn access on all four sides, sound fascia, aluminum, four drops.

House B — a 1908 two-and-a-half story. Main eave at 26 ft, a lower porch run at 14 ft, half-round copper, a bay and a conservatory roof requiring staging, seven drops, and fascia that has not been painted since the Clinton administration.

The eave measurement is identical. The vertical run is four times longer, the elbow count triples, the joints have to be soldered instead of formed, and a third of the day goes to staging that has nothing to do with gutter at all. A single per-foot price cannot survive that spread, and any number wide enough to cover House B will lose House A to the next bidder.

Is that number a markup or a margin?

Different arithmetic, and gutter crews mix them up constantly because material is a small share of the total.

Markup goes on top of your cost. Margin comes out of the price you charge. House A costing you $1,480 in coil, accessories, labor, and truck, marked up 30 percent, invoices at $1,924 — a margin of 23 percent. If 30 percent margin was the goal, the arithmetic is $1,480 ÷ 0.70 = $2,114. On a trade where a full day is often one job, that 7-point gap is most of a truck payment across a season.

Marking up the coil alone is worse. Coil is frequently under a quarter of what the job costs you, so a heavy markup on that line moves the total barely at all while your labor rides at cost.

Why is cleaning priced on a different unit entirely?

Because there is no fabrication in it, and the drivers are different.

Cleaning is usually priced by house size and story count, sometimes with a roofline-length component, not by the foot of gutter. What actually moves it is how many times the ladder gets repositioned, whether the roof is walkable, how many drops have to be flushed and snaked, and whether guards have to come off and go back on. A three-story with a 10/12 pitch and mesh guards is a different service from a one-story ranch with open troughs, even at identical footage.

Price it as its own service with its own minimum. Bundling a cleaning into an installation quote at “no charge” gives away a full return visit.

What gets recorded before the ladder comes down?

The evidence and the invoice, on the same day.
