Everything in the fascia and substrate rows becomes billable only if your estimate told the customer in writing that the board behind the gutter is not visible until the old run comes off. An estimate silent on that leaves you arguing that a house you agreed to hang gutter on turned out to have wood behind it.
Why does the linear foot price hide the downspouts?
Because a linear foot of trough is the fastest, cheapest part of the job and a downspout is the slowest. A hundred feet of 5 inch K-style comes off the machine in one continuous run, gets hung on hidden hangers, and is done. The old house tells you what somebody installed once, not what the roof requires. A common field rule is one 2x3 downspout per roughly 600 sq ft of roof draining to that run, and one 3x4 per roughly 1,200 sq ft, since the larger pipe carries about double. Your actual sizing depends on local rainfall intensity, the pitch feeding the run, and how much of the roof valleys into one corner. Count the drops off the roof, quote them as units, and say on the estimate how many are included. A customer who sees “6 downspouts included” can see the seventh when it gets added.

Fascia is the gutter trade’s version of a hidden condition, and it is invisible until the old run is on the ground. Spiked gutter that has been leaking for fifteen years has usually been feeding the top edge of that board the whole time.
You cannot hang a new gutter on soft wood. Hidden hangers screw into the fascia, and if the screw spins, the run comes down in the first heavy rain with your name on it. How do I raise the price with the old gutter already in the driveway?

Use that honestly rather than as pressure. The right sequence is short.
Stop before the new coil is run on the affected elevation. Set the ladder, put a screwdriver into the soft wood and photograph it going in, then photograph the run with a tape stretched along the rot so the length is in the frame. Come down and say the finding in plain measurements: the fascia is soft across roughly 22 feet on the north elevation, hangers will not hold in it, and hanging over it puts a full run of water on a board that is already failing.
Then write the change order before any extra work starts. Date it, name the elevation, state the condition as a measurement rather than a description, list the quantities of board, primer, paint, drip edge, and fasteners, state the crew hours and whether it costs a day of schedule, and put the original amount, the addition, and the revised total on one line with a place for approval. Gutter tilts that arithmetic toward finishing more often than other trades, for a specific reason: the mobilization is already spent. The machine is on site, the coil is on the trailer, and the crew is standing there. Walking away means eating the setup and the travel and still owning a house with the old gutter in the driveway. Derive the foot price instead of picking it. One number that covers everything is the thing that failed.

- Add an access class. One story, two story, three story or lift-required. Do not average them across one address.
- Amortize mobilization and set a minimum. The setup happens once per address. A minimum charge is what makes small jobs survivable rather than something you quietly resent.
- Handle materials by their own reality. Aluminum in .027 and .032 are different products at different price points, steel and galvanized carry a different weight and different tools, and copper is a different trade day entirely, with soldered joints, slower labor, offcuts that are worth real money, and theft exposure while it sits.
- Convert to loaded cost. Wages plus payroll burden, workers comp and liability, truck and trailer, the machine, ladders and a lift, plus the unbilled hours spent measuring and quoting.
- Take profit as a margin, not a markup. Add 30 percent to $2,400 of cost and you bill $3,120 and keep 23 percent of it. To keep 30 percent, divide by 0.70 and bill $3,428. Markup multiplies and margin divides.
