Electrical Pricing Guide: Devices, Circuits, and Service Amps
Short answer: An electrical pricing guide has to carry three units at once — device count for receptacles, switches, and fixtures; circuit count for the wire that feeds them; and service size in amps once the panel is involved. The device is the cheap part. What you are selling is the path to it, and that path costs four to six times more behind finished plaster than in open rough-in. The same 48 A EV charger priced below runs $1,218 in one house and $9,506 in another.
A homeowner counting outlets on a wall is counting the one thing on the job that barely matters. The device is twenty minutes and eight dollars. Everything else — the homerun, the drilling, the fishing, the panel space, the load calculation, the permit, the two inspections, and the drywall you cut to get there — is the actual product. This guide separates the three units, shows which site conditions detach the price from all of them, and prices one identical charger install in two houses. Which unit is the job actually sold in?
Three, stacked, and most jobs use two of them.

Quote a device count without a circuit count and you have priced the ends of a wire without the wire. Quote both without checking service size and you may have sold a job the panel cannot accept.
What does a “per outlet” price actually cover?
The last twenty minutes of a two-hour task. On a new-construction rough-in, a receptacle is a nail-on box, a staple, and a loop of 12/2 — the wall is open, the drill has a clear path, and the crew is doing forty of them in a row. On a finished house it is a stud finder, two cuts, a flex bit fished blind past insulation and fire blocking, an old-work box, a fish tape, and a drywall repair.

Where does the circuit get priced?
By the run, not by the outlet on it. A circuit’s cost is set by conductor size, length, and what the path goes through.

Two rules move money on the page. Overcurrent protection for 14, 12, and 10 AWG is capped at 15, 20, and 30 A regardless of what the ampacity table says. And a continuous load — one drawing maximum current for three hours or more — is sized at 125 percent, which is why a 48 A charger lands on a 60 A breaker and 6 AWG rather than 8. Length is the other price driver. Long runs push conductor size up for voltage drop before ampacity ever becomes the limit, and a 60 ft run to a detached garage is a different conductor than the same amperage 11 ft away.
When does the panel become the whole job?
The moment a load calculation fails. Adding one 60 A circuit to a full 100 A service is not a circuit job with a panel line attached — it is a service upgrade with a circuit attached, and the two prices are not in the same neighborhood.
What rides along with a service upgrade, all of it billable and none of it visible from the driveway: the load calculation itself, the utility application and their appointment window, a new meter socket and often a mast, the panel and every breaker in it, re-landing and re-labeling every existing circuit, arc-fault and ground-fault devices the current code requires on the circuits you touch, a grounding electrode system that meets today’s rules rather than 1962’s, and a bonding jumper on the water and gas piping. Then two inspections instead of one.
Run the calculation before the number goes out, not after. A refused permit or a failed inspection is a return trip you already sold at zero dollars.

Same charger, same amperage, 7.8 times the price. Nothing about the device explains it.
The margin line deserves a second look, because this is where money quietly leaves. Adding 30 percent markup to House B’s $6,402.50 gives $8,323 — that is a 23.1 percent margin and $823 less than pricing to a 30 percent margin. Markup goes on top of cost. Margin comes out of price. They are different arithmetic and only one of them gets you the number you decided on.
What is a published per-outlet price worth?
A sanity check, and only that. The two figures above came from one set of placeholder rates on one pair of houses.
Electrical labor swings on things that have nothing to do with the wall in front of you: whether your market is union or open shop, what a journeyman costs where you are, how much new residential is absorbing crews that season, and what your general liability and license renewals run. Copper moves with the commodity market and gear has spent years on allocation, so a panel quote can go stale in a month. Permit fees are set by a jurisdiction that never asked your opinion.
Use a published figure the way you would use a tester: to tell you something is wrong, not to tell you what to charge. If your calculated number lands at half or double what comparable local bids run, the error is almost always in the access multiplier, the circuit count, or a load calculation you skipped.
What do I record once the inspection passes?
Three things make next year’s prices better: field hours by phase against hours bid, material cost against the takeoff, and every trip you drove. A job like House B pulls six or seven separate drives out of you — supply house, permit office, utility appointment, rough-in, final, and the trip back for the sticker. How do electricians price a job?
By counting devices, counting circuits, and checking service size, then multiplying the device and circuit counts by wall access. A receptacle in open rough-in and the same receptacle in a finished plaster wall are the same part and a very different job. After the counts, add loaded labor hours, overhead per billable hour, permit and inspection fees at cost, and your margin.
Why is adding an outlet so expensive?
Because the outlet is not what you are buying. The cost is the path — locating a source with capacity, drilling plates, fishing blind through insulation and fire blocking, cutting and patching drywall, and possibly a new circuit and breaker if the existing one is loaded. Add the permit and inspection where required, and the device itself is a rounding error on the total.
Do I need a permit to add a circuit?
In most jurisdictions, yes. Circuit additions, panel work, and service changes typically require a permit and at least one inspection, and many require both a rough-in and a final. There is no one number, and any single figure you see should be treated as a sanity check. The price is set by your load calculation, whether the meter socket and mast are being replaced, how many circuits get re-landed, what devices current code requires on the circuits you touch, the grounding electrode work, permit fees, and how long the utility makes you wait for a disconnect and reconnect.
Should I charge a flat rate or hourly for electrical work?
Flat where the scope is fully visible — a device swap, a fixture on an existing box, a known circuit in open framing. Hourly, or flat with a written conditional line, where the wall is closed and the path is unknown. Trace work, aluminum branch wiring, and knob-and-tube discoveries cannot be priced from a doorway without a stated allowance.
What is a service call fee for an electrician?
A flat charge covering the drive, the arrival, and the first block of diagnostic time before any repair begins. Set it from what a short ticket actually consumes on the clock — load-out, travel both ways, setup, cleanup, and invoicing — not from the working minutes alone.
