Short answer: When a concrete estimate came in too low, the yardage is rarely what broke. The first four are conversations. The last two are lessons. Access and yardage are yours to verify at the site walk, and a customer will not fund either one after the fact.

Did the slab get thicker than the number I bid?

This is the miss that nobody sees because it never appears anywhere. Yardage scales straight with average thickness, and average thickness is set by the subgrade, not by the plan.

Take a 600 ft² pad. The math is fixed: area in square feet times thickness in feet, divided by 27.

Half an inch of average over-dig on that pad is nearly a full extra yard, roughly 12 percent. A full inch is 25 percent. Nobody digs an inch deep on purpose — it accumulates from a low corner, a machine that scalped one pass, and a subgrade nobody ran a string over. The slab is still 4 inches at the stake and 5.5 in the middle, and the plant bills every yard of it.

Order with a stated waste allowance rather than hoping. Most crews carry 5 to 10 percent, and the correct number is the one your own last ten pours produced. Then compare the batch tickets against your takeoff every time, because that comparison is the only way the allowance ever gets honest.

Running short is the expensive direction. A second truck dispatched mid-pour costs a delivery charge, a short-load surcharge, and the wait, and if the wait runs long you have a cold joint in the middle of a slab that was sold as monolithic. That is a defect, not an inconvenience.

Why did forming eat a day on a small pad?

Because forms are sold by the linear foot and slabs are sold by the square foot, and the ratio between them changes with shape alone.

Same 8 yards on the ticket. Two and a half times the forming, two and a half times the stakes, two and a half times the edging, three times the joints, and a great deal more string-line time. A per-square-foot price built on driveways loses money on walks, ribbons, curbs, and anything that wraps a house.

Joint spacing is a real quantity, not a detail. The common rule for unreinforced slabs on grade puts control joints at roughly 24 to 36 times the slab thickness, so a 4-inch slab wants panels somewhere in the 8 to 12 foot range, cut at least a quarter of the depth. Count those feet at bid time and price them, because saw cutting is a return trip on a schedule the concrete sets, not you.

What falls out of a concrete bid every single time?

The items that are not the slab. Every one of them is billed in a unit other than square feet, which is exactly why a square-foot price swallows them.

  • Excavation and haul-off, by the yard. Spoil takes up more volume loose than it did in the ground, and it leaves in a truck somebody pays for.
  • Base stone, by the volume then converted to weight. Four inches of compacted base under 600 ft² is about 7.4 yd³ of stone. Your quarry sells by the ton and uses its own conversion factor — get that factor from the quarry, not from a forum.
  • Compaction. A plate compactor and the passes it takes are labor. Skipping it is how a slab settles and cracks in year two.
  • Forms and stakes, by the linear foot, including the ones you lose in the ground on a curved layout.
  • Steel. Welded wire by the roll or sheet, rebar by the linear foot with laps and chairs counted, and the labor to keep it off the dirt.
  • Mix design. Strength in psi, air entrainment where there is freeze-thaw, fiber, accelerator, retarder, color. Each is a per-yard adder on the plant’s rate sheet, not an opinion.
  • Pump or buggy. A pump has a minimum charge whether it runs two hours or six. A backyard slab reached by buggy through a gate is pure labor and it never shows up in a per-foot rate.
  • Finish, by name. Broom, hard trowel, exposed aggregate, salt, and stamped are different operations with different crew sizes and different failure risks. Stamped adds release, mats, color, cleanup, and a sealer coat that comes back on another day.
  • Saw cutting, by the linear foot, on the concrete’s schedule.
  • Cure and protection. Blankets, curing compound, plastic, and the trip back to pull it off.
  • Weather. Cold weather work is governed by ACI 306, which defines it by three successive days averaging below 40°F and requires that the concrete be protected from freezing while it gains early strength. Hot weather is the mirror image: ACI 305 treats high evaporation rates as the trigger for retarders, evaporation retardant, wet burlap, and a crew that has to be bigger to keep ahead of the set. Both cost money and both are seasonal, so a rate built in May does not hold in January.

When can I still correct the price, and when is the window shut?

Before the order is placed is the good one. Nothing is perishable yet, quantities are still arguable on paper, and a customer who has not watched a truck arrive is still a customer making a decision. Before the stone goes in is the second, and it is where the excavation surprises surface — soft soil, an old footing, a buried stump, a grade that was never what the plan said.

After the forms are set and before the truck is dispatched is the last one. It is narrow and it is uncomfortable, and it is still better than the alternative.

Once the truck discharges there is no window at all. You cannot deliver half a slab, you cannot un-pour a driveway, and a rejected pour is not a do-over — it is a demolition bill on top of the pour you already paid for. The batch ticket is the strongest attachment you will ever have on a concrete change order. It is issued by the plant, not by you, and it shows yards, mix design, strength, admixtures, and water added on site. When is eating the loss the right answer?

More often in this trade than in most, because your alternative is usually worse.

Absorb it when the miss is your own — a thickness you never verified, an access you never walked, a finish you priced by habit. Absorb it when the gap is small against the contract and the customer sends work. Absorb it when the only other option is a cold joint or a rushed finish, because a flawed slab is visible from the street for thirty years and it comes back as a callback in year two rather than a discount today.

Do not absorb it when the scope actually changed — a finish upgraded after the bid, a thickness increased for a vehicle nobody mentioned, a footing depth the inspector raised, or an excavation that hit rock or fill. Those are conditions, they are documented, and they belong in a signed change order before the plant is called.

How do I rebuild the per-square-foot number?

From your own last ten pours, in this order.

  1. Split the units. Yards for mix. Tons for stone. Cubic yards for excavation and haul. Linear feet for forms and saw cuts. Square feet only for the finish.
  2. Build material from coverage, with your real waste percentage, and price the mix at the plant’s per-yard rate including admixtures, short-load thresholds, and delivery.
  3. Get hours from measured crew production, separately for excavation, base and compaction, forming, steel, placement, finish, and the return trip for saw cutting and cure removal.
  4. Load the hour. Wage plus payroll burden, truck and trailer, mixer or buggy, power trowel, saw and blades, forms consumed, insurance, and the annual fixed cost divided across hours you actually sell — not clock hours.
  5. Add profit as margin, not markup. Add 25 percent to $8,000 of cost and you bill $10,000 and keep 20 percent. To keep 25 percent you divide by 0.75 and bill $10,667. Markup multiplies, margin divides, and every job in a year carries the difference.
