What Is Apple Intelligence?
Apple Intelligence is the AI system built into iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It is not a chatbot you download. It is a layer of the operating system: a set of Apple-trained models, the chips that run them, the features built on top, and the tools that let other apps use the same models.
It also happens to be the clearest mainstream example of on-device AI, which is why it matters well beyond Apple’s own features.
What exactly is Apple Intelligence?
It helps to separate three layers.
The models. Apple trained its own foundation models, including a compact language model designed to run directly on the device. There are also models for images and other tasks, but the language model is the one that matters for writing.
The features. Apple uses these models for system features: Writing Tools that proofread, rewrite, and summarize text in most apps, summaries of notifications and messages, image generation, and a more capable Siri.
The developer layer. Apple lets third-party apps call the on-device language model. A developer can build AI features that run with the same local guarantees as Apple’s own.
What actually runs on the device?
The everyday work happens locally. The on-device model is stored on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac and executes on Apple’s own chips, including the Neural Engine, hardware built specifically for machine learning.
Local execution has three direct consequences. The text being processed does not leave the device. There is no network round trip, so small tasks feel instant. And the features keep working with no connection at all.
There is a hardware catch. Running a language model takes real memory and compute, so Apple Intelligence requires recent devices: newer iPhones, and iPads and Macs with Apple silicon. Availability also varies by language and region. On older hardware, the features simply do not appear.
There is also a size catch, and it is worth stating plainly. The on-device model is small by modern AI standards. It is built for common language tasks — rewriting, proofreading, summarizing, short drafts — not for frontier-level reasoning over huge documents.
What is Private Cloud Compute?
Some requests need more capacity than the local model has. For those, Apple built Private Cloud Compute, its own server tier running on Apple-designed chips, which certain Apple Intelligence features can call. It is still a server, and a request that uses it does leave the device. The difference is that its privacy claims are checkable. Apple states that data sent to Private Cloud Compute is used only to fulfill the request and is never stored, that Apple staff cannot access it, and it publishes the server software images so independent security researchers can inspect those claims; devices are designed to refuse servers running unpublished software. That is a meaningfully higher bar than an ordinary cloud backend, and it deserves to be taken seriously. It is still not the same as data never leaving your device.
What does this enable for other apps?
The developer layer changes what kinds of apps can exist. Before, any app offering AI writing had to send your text to a server, either its own or a model provider’s. That meant infrastructure, costs that scale with every request, and a privacy policy you had to take on faith.
With the on-device model, an app can generate text with no server at all. There is nothing to host, no per-request cost, and nothing to log, because nothing is transmitted.
It also makes privacy claims testable. Deep research, long-document analysis, and complex multi-step reasoning remain cloud jobs, and cloud AI is genuinely good at them.
The right way to read Apple Intelligence is narrower: it makes common, personal, everyday language tasks instant and private. That covers more of real life than it sounds.

Open Settings and look for Apple Intelligence & Siri. If your device supports it, you can turn it on there and see which features are available. If the section is missing, your hardware does not support it.
